It is a safer and non-toxic substitution to lead. Moreover, their higher density also enables alloy sheets to protect from radiation better, even under extreme conditions. While depleted uranium offers comparable density to tungsten alloy, it is volatile in nature and requires special licensing requirements needed for radioactive materials, which makes working with it difficult.
